animal rights media collective

This stark poster attempts to challenge the inconsistency of those who love dogs yet eat cows. Credit for the image belongs to someone else, although I don't know who. If you post these in public, don't expect them to stay up for very long. Looks great on a laser printer and photocopier.

This document advertised the events our group, Students for the Ethical Treatment of Animals organized during the last half of the Fall 1997 semester. Getting the word out about events is crucial to getting people to show up. Events posters don't just tell people about events, they also establish an awareness of the presence of your group in your community.

This flyer was designed to encourage people to volunteer at the local animal shelter. At many shelters the only time the animals get any attention is when volunteers visit. You can easily change this flyer to promote your local shelter. This page was intended to be printed in black and white.

This poster really generated a lot of positive attention for our group. To make some cheap stickers I printed this on 8.5x11 sheets of adhesive paper, 8 or so to a sheet and then passed them out at public events. The MS Word version is better for posters, or download the bitmap image if you want to make stickers. Images are courtesy of Farm Sanctuary.

The grandfather of democratized media, the humble poster is an ideal medium for the activist- whether working alone or in a group. It can challenge assumptions, inform, and question. At it's best it's a work of art. Posters are understandable and accessible. They're also cheap to make.

That's cheap as in free or nearly free for the resourceful activist. Many of us have access to free college and company printers. Others have connections with print shops and copy machine repairpersons. Even if you have to bite the bullet and pay for it you won't be paying much.

If you are in a group, consider printing enough to pass out stacks to group members willing to put them up as they go about their daily routine.

If you want to reduce the environmental impact of your flyering try raiding the recycle bin at work or school. Stack all of the used paper with the clean side facing the same way, get the edges even with each other, stick the paper in the printer tray and print. Voila- zero energy recycling you can practice in the comfort of home. By the way, if the printer jams too often due to curling edges leave the stacked paper on a shelf for a while and it should straighten out.
